A sneak-peak behind my animation process
Hi everyone! Thanks for dropping by one more time. In today´s entry, I will show you a behind the scenes of the animation “The Story of the World”, I did last week. You can watch it on my IG.

It´s a story about invasions, colonialism, capitalism, resource exploitation, animal-human relations, then change, adaptation, and appropriation.
I use drawing and writing as a form of self-expression for basically everything I feel or think. Sometimes it would be a rabbit making a joke about a cake, other times more “serious” topics like this one.
I wanted to show you how I approached these ideas from beginning to finish point:
Everything starts with pencil and paper for me. Some quick lines do the job of catching the idea and transporting it from my mind to the tangible world. This might sound wo-hoo but I think paper hosts ideas, making them feel comfortable, on its beautiful texture and color (if you want to know more about paper history read this article I wrote), and promoting its development.

Because this story has text, I quickly write a first draft of the sentences. Quick is the main point for me at this moment, slowly fine tuning will come later. However, having the text allows me to understand how many drawings I will need and if the story has potential and can live for itself.

Sketching follows the writing (depending on the idea this can be the other way around). Here are some undetailed sketches. I sketch on a different color than black because I feel that using colors stimulates my creativity and sets me in a better mood, it feels more like playing, like a child with crayons. I also like to use a thick pencil with a lot of texture because of the same principle.

Then the clean-up part comes. Here is where I care a lot about the details and can perfectly spend 30 min on drawing a single eye. When the subjects of the story are characters with a face, you won´t believe it but the smallest inclination of a line can change the whole mood of the character, therefore changing the whole idea. I enjoy a lot this part becuase I love to think about details and work them out, also because it´s a step closer to the final version.

I think a lot in movement and giving the lines a subtle vibration makes everything come to life. You can watch the animation here.
I hope you enjoyed a lot the process behind it. Thanks for reading and sharing!
